Between 1985 and 1992, Wild Turkey released a 12-year-old bourbon in a bottle with gold metallic foil that was, by any contemporary design standard, aggressively of its era — a gleaming, slightly garish metallic label that the bourbon collector community has retrospectively and affectionately named "Cheesy Gold Foil." What the name acknowledges with a smile, the content confirms with reverence: the liquid inside those 1980s and 1990s bottles has become the most sought-after and the most specifically legendary series of Wild Turkey dusties in the American whiskey secondary market. Cherry. Oak. Leather. VinePair calls those three the "Holy Bourbon Trinity" of vintage Wild Turkey. Rare Bird 101 calls them what they are: the reason collectors pay extraordinary sums for 30-year-old bottles with slightly ridiculous labels.
Bruce Russell is Jimmy Russell's grandson. Jimmy Russell is the Master Distiller who worked at Wild Turkey for over 60 years — longer than any other Master Distiller at any single American distillery, a record that stands in the industry as one of its most specifically extraordinary achievements. Jimmy's son Eddie Russell has been Master Distiller alongside him and then alone. Bruce Russell is the third generation, now serving as Associate Master Blender, the man whose notebook from around 2015 contained the idea that has now become the Austin Nichols Archives Collection — a new limited-edition annual series honoring Wild Turkey's most iconic vintage releases.
The Gold Foil Edition is the inaugural release. Sixteen years old. One hundred and twenty proof. Fifty barrels. Non-chill filtered. From Camp Nelson F, D, and E rickhouses. And — confirmed from Rare Bird 101's conversation with Bruce Russell directly — the last international Wild Turkey release that is 100% distilled at the original Austin Nichols Distillery, the still that Jimmy and Eddie Russell used to build every legendary bottle of vintage Wild Turkey. The still that made the Cheesy Gold Foil.
VinePair tasted it and called it a contender for bourbon of the year. The official tasting notes confirm Wild Turkey's signature mature oak "funk," dark fruit, cherry cola, clove, dark honey, and an extremely long finish of peppery spice, brown sugar, and leather. The Whisky Advocate confirmed it. Fifty barrels available to the world. At Blackwell's.
ORIGINS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Wild Turkey has been producing bourbon in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky since 1869 — drawing limestone-filtered water from the Kentucky River at one of the most specifically bourbon-productive geological formations in the Commonwealth, the deep limestone shelf whose natural filtration and mineral contribution have defined the Wild Turkey house character across 150 years of continuous production. The distillery is now owned by the Campari Group and operated under the stewardship of the Russell family — three generations of whom have shaped the character of every Wild Turkey expression since Jimmy Russell joined the distillery in 1954.
The Austin Nichols Archives Collection was created by Bruce Russell — Jimmy's grandson, now serving as Associate Master Blender — from a notebook he had maintained since approximately 2015, when Eddie Russell asked Bruce to write down concepts for future limited releases. The Gold Foil Edition concept was always at the top of that list: a modern tribute to the Cheesy Gold Foil, the 1985–1992 vintage 12-year-old that the collector community has elevated to legendary status through their passion for the specific mature oak character and the cherry-leather-oak trinity that those bottles delivered.
To build the Gold Foil Edition, Bruce sourced 50 barrels specifically from Wild Turkey's Camp Nelson rickhouses — the Camp Nelson F, D, and E warehouses whose specific elevation, airflow, and climate conditions create the richness and depth that the Cheesy Gold Foil's most celebrated qualities required. He aged the selected barrels to 16 years — four more years than the original 12-year Cheesy Gold Foil — and bottled at 120 proof rather than the original's 101 proof, allowing the additional age and the higher concentration to deliver the mature oak "funk" and the deep flavor integration that the 1980s vintage was celebrated for, but in a specifically 2026 bourbon context.
The production note that makes this bottle historically singular: Rare Bird 101's conversation with Bruce Russell confirmed that the Gold Foil Edition is the last international Wild Turkey release that is 100% distilled at the original Austin Nichols Distillery still — the copper pot stills that Jimmy Russell and Eddie Russell used to build their careers, to which virtually every legendary bottle of vintage Wild Turkey has a direct connection. The new Wild Turkey distillery has been the primary production facility for years; the original Austin Nichols Distillery stock is now exhausted with this release.
The packaging honors the original: a vintage-style bottle inside an autumnal hunting scene canister inspired by Wild Turkey's origin story and vintage advertising, with gold foil lining inside and a label reminiscent of the original vintage — "less cheesy" in VinePair's characterization, but entirely intentional in its tribute.
