Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Speyside, Scotland | NAS (Rum Cask Finish) | Distillery: The Glenlivet
Production & Heritage
The Glenlivet distillery, founded in 1824 in Speyside by George Smith, holds the distinction of being one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland. The Caribbean Reserve is distilled from malted barley and Scottish spring water using traditional copper pot stills, following the same foundational process behind the distillery's core range. What separates this expression is its finishing step: only a portion of the single malt is transferred into barrels that previously held Caribbean rum, and the finished whisky is then married together, allowing tropical fruit character to layer onto The Glenlivet's signature orchard-fruit profile without overwhelming it.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Sweet pear and crisp apple arrive first, quickly joined by ripe banana in syrup and a tropical undertone. Rich caramel toffee emerges alongside mandarin orange, vanilla, and honeydew melon as the nose develops.
Taste: The palate opens with toffee sweetness and clementine orange, settling into a mid-palate of tropical fruit and banana. Warm baking spice and vanilla build steadily, balanced by a gentle citrus brightness drawn from the rum cask influence.
Finish: The finish is long, fruity, and gentle, with lingering notes of caramel and soft tropical fruit. A faint warmth from the rum barrel seasoning carries through to the close without bitterness.
How to Drink Caribbean Reserve
Neat or with a single ice cube is the best starting point — a small amount of dilution opens the tropical aromatics without flattening the toffee core. Three cocktails that suit this expression particularly well:
- Highball: The citrus and banana notes stretch beautifully with soda water and a thin wheel of orange.
- Tropical Old Fashioned: Swap classic bourbon for Caribbean Reserve; its inherent toffee and fruit sweetness pairs naturally with a dash of Angostura bitters and a pineapple garnish.
- Whisky Sour: The rum-cask sweetness provides a richer, more layered base than a standard single malt, reducing the need for heavy simple syrup.
